Culverts/Ditches

Culverts and Ditches

Culverts and ditches may often go unnoticed, but they serve an important function in protecting our City from the challenges posed by heavy rainfall, stormwater runoff, and erosion. These components of our drainage system:

  • Prevent flooding in residential and commercial areas
  • Safeguard water quality by filtering pollutants
  • Preserve natural habitats
  • Maintain road safety and infrastructure

Ditches:

The City of Macedonia has many ditch-lined roads. Over time, many of these ditches become filled with too much silt, mud, or debris. In these instances, it may impede the flow of stormwater through the ditch.  The City runs a program in which we will come to your property and assess the current state of your ditch in the right-of-way. If deemed necessary by the City, we may use equipment to re-grade your ditch. As always, the first step in this process is to call the Service Department at 330-468-8324.

Steps for Driveway Culvert Replacement:

  1. Resident makes a call to the Service Department to ask about the program.
  2. The Service Department will explain the premise of the program and direct the resident to obtain a permit for the work being performed on their property.
  3. Once the resident has obtained a permit, they will call the Service Department back to schedule a time to meet with the Service Supervisor.
  4. The Service Supervisor will meet with the resident on the property and assess the current pipe and size for the new pipe. The Supervisor will let the resident know what type of pipe, including length and diameter, they will need to purchase.
  5. The resident will purchase the pipe from a local distributor, and either pick the pipe up or have it delivered.
  6. The resident may now call the Service Department and/or Service Supervisor back to schedule for the Service Department to complete the work.
  7. The city will remove and haul away the necessary depth and width of the driveway apron, remove old culvert pipe and any other spoils. New pipe will be installed along with premium stone base and surrounding pipe to ensure proper securement while underground. Driveway will then be topped with tamped asphalt grindings to grade of existing driveway height and roadway.
  8. The property owner will be responsible for replacement of the driveway surface as soon as possible.
  9. While the City cannot recommend where to purchase the pipe from, we can provide a couple of vendors for you to reference and shop around for the price that best serves you.
