The Macedonia Communications Center provides police dispatch services to the Macedonia, Northfield Village, and Sagamore Hills police departments. Additionally, it handles fire and EMS dispatch services for the Macedonia Fire District, covering Macedonia, Sagamore Hills, and Northfield Center, as well as the Northfield Village Fire Department.
The Macedonia Communications Center is equipped with the most modern tools and technology to enhance communication with callers and assist emergency responders. The center features a Next Generation 9-1-1 telephone system and an 800 MHz radio system, enabling seamless communication between all local agencies. Much like “caller ID,” Next Gen 9-1-1 provides the caller's name, address, and phone number, as well as latitude and longitude, which is sent directly to the mapping system. Additionally, the center utilizes RapidSOS, which pinpoints a caller’s location using connected devices and sensors, providing real-time updates to help emergency responders locate callers or vehicles, especially when the caller is unfamiliar with the area or unable to speak. RapidSOS has recently expanded to include alarm companies, allowing dispatch to be notified immediately of an alarm, eliminating the delay of waiting for the alarm companies to contact dispatch.
To further improve communication, the Macedonia Communications Center uses Prepared Live, a tool that allows dispatchers to text with callers, share video, and receive pictures. This feature is particularly useful for handling 911 hang-up calls or when a caller is having difficulty explaining their location or providing crucial details relevant to the emergency.
Being a 911 emergency dispatcher requires extraordinary abilities. Dispatchers must quickly gather vast amounts of information and then relay it calmly and efficiently to responding units. Courtesy and composure under pressure are essential, making this a job for those with exceptional patience and resilience.
